Edward Crutchley, British menswear designer, and Alan Scott, Creative Director of Johnstons of Elgin, are judging this year’s The Woolmark Company TexSelect Award.

An enduring highlight of the TexSelect calendar is the judging and presentation of The Woolmark Company TexSelect Award in Paris at Première Vision Designs. The Woolmark Company has supported TexSelect since the charity was founded, with the Award established in 2011. It recognises design excellence in fabrics created with 60% or more Merino wool, whether presented as printed, woven, knitted and/or mixed media fabric.

As 2019 is TexSelect’s final year, this will also be the final award from The Woolmark Company, which makes it extra-special. So TexSelect and The Woolmark Company are delighted to work with two such exceptional judges, who will be in Paris this September to pick a winner.

Edward Crutchley, from Yorkshire, has a close connection with The Woolmark Company as the winner of two prizes at the 2019 edition of the International Woolmark Prize – he is the first designer ever to win two prizes.

With an industry-wide expertise in fabric and textile development, Crutchley has consulted for many of the leading names in the fashion industry such as Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Supreme, Kanye West, Pringle of Scotland and Richard Nicoll. He’s also worked with a variety of textile producers from Yorkshire tailoring mills to Kyoto kimono printers.

Launching his own label in 2015, he is now a regular on the runway at London Fashion Week Menʼs, developing a reputation as one of London’s rising stars pushing a vision of fashion that moves beyond boundaries or gender. Stockists include Lane Crawford, Matches, Galeries Lafayette, Browns and Harrods.

Louise Campbell, Product & Education Extension Manager at The Woolmark Company, says: “It’s a true harmonious fit with Edward, who worked very closely with the Johnstons’ team to create his stunning International Woolmark Prize collection”.

From Johnstons of Elgin itself, TexSelect welcomes the Award’s second judge, Alan Scott, who joined Johnstons as Creative Director in February 2016. Scott has three decades of design experience, including stints as a creative consultant for Barbour and Joules in the UK and luxury brands Loro Piana and Vestimenta in Italy.

Scott had a meteoric start to his career. Soon after graduating from Kingston, he was quickly made menswear development director at Donna Karan in New York, forging an outstanding creative bond with the American designer – a first menswear collection was launched in 1991. For some years, he also ran his own eponymous label besides his widespread consultancy.

The winner of The Woolmark Company TexSelect Award will receive £1,000 plus ongoing support from The Woolmark Company and opportunities to learn about developments.

The Woolmark Company is the global authority on wool.  Through its extensive network of relationships spanning the international textile and fashion industries, the company highlights Australian wool’s position as the ultimate natural fibre and premier ingredient in luxury apparel.  As part of its programme of investments, The Woolmark Company fosters the education and development of tertiary textile and fashion students, inspiring them in the early stage of their careers about the properties and benefits of Merino wool.
